Everything that could possibly go wrong for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 has gone wrong. Out of the eight matches played, they have only two; they have lost their regular skipper, Ruturaj Gaikwad, due to an injury, and the batting form of the team has been miserable, including that of stand-in captain MS Dhoni.
As a result, they are 10th in the IPL 2025 points table and have looked like the worst team in the competition, where the players have shown a lack of intent to win matches. Having said that, all is not lost for the team. After 9 clashes, they still have an outside chance to make it to the playoffs.
IPL 2025 Playoffs: CSK Qualification Scenarios
Firstly, CSK need to win their 5 remaining matches. They can’t put a foot wrong, and batting and bowling together need to come good. However, that may not be good enough. Barring Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) last year, no team has qualified for the IPL Playoffs with 16 or fewer points. At best they can get to 14 points.
But RCB making it to the final four with 14 points last season should give CSK some hope. However, they would need help from other teams. They would like for teams like Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Titans to win as many matches as possible, barring against them of course.
This would mean that they can still get through with a net run rate (NRR) boost. As of now, they have the worst NRR. But if they win five consecutive matches, they could change. It’s highly improbable, but they still have a chance to make the IPL 2025 Playoffs.
