Ο Gautam Gambhir, από τότε που έγινε προπονητής της Ινδίας, δυσκολεύεται με τη στρατηγική να φέρει όσο το δυνατόν περισσότερους παίκτες.
There was a time when a player was selected just for his primary skill. But modern-day cricket has become so cut-throat that the bias towards multi-faceted players has taken precedence. Especially for bowlers, it always helps if they add up with some batting. This is the reason why India’s current spin bowling sensation Varun Chakravarthy has been eyeing to hon his batting skills under India’s assistant coach Abhishek Nayar.
Varun Chakravarthy to fit in the Gautam Gambhir mould?
Gautam Gambhir loves having all-rounders in his playing XI. It is a pattern that we saw even during the first India vs England T20I in Kolkata, where he went ahead with as many as nine batting options. But Chakravarthy wants to it ten, as he has shared about his progress as a batter ever since making his return to the Indian team last year.
“I have been working on my batting under Abhishek Nayar over the last six months,” said Chakravarthy during the pre-match press conference in Chennai. He even revealed that he is keeping an eye out for different videos to make strategic calls to his game. “I watch videos, look into a batsman’s area of hitting, if he has come up with a new shot, what is his release shot, and plan accordingly.”

Varun Chakravarthy is back & how!
While the IPL 2024 season played a key role in his resurgence—he picked up 21 wickets in 14 innings at an exceptional average of 14.00 and led KKR to their title triumph—it is Chakravarthy’s consistent domestic performances that have kept him in peak form. His outings in the Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) 2023, where he took 19 wickets with a strike rate of 18.00, were particularly instrumental in maintaining his rhythm. Ever since his comeback, the 33-year-old has claimed an impressive 20 wickets in T20Is at an average of 11.70, making him the highest wicket-taker in the format not only for India but among full-member nations.
Now comes another challenge as he faces England in his own backyard in Chennai. Chakravarthy’s family will be on the stands, hoping the mystery tweaker to weave his magic once again!
