Λόγω του γεγονότος ότι η Ινδία θα συναντηθεί με τη Νέα Ζηλανδία στα Trophies Champions, είναι γνωστό ότι οι Blackcaps επικράτησαν στα τουρνουά ICC. Αλλά είχατε ποτέ δύο ομάδες στο Trophy Champions;
There is no question that in recent times, what New Zealand has done against India is incredible. Their Test team, which recently toured India, came and thumped Rohit Sharma and Co. with a 3-0 margin, handing India a home series defeat in Test cricket after 12 years of dominance.
But now, it’s time for India to redeem themselves—though in a different format, as the Men in Blue are set to meet New Zealand in the Champions Trophy.
New Zealand surely has a good record against India in ICC tournaments, whether in the T20 World Cup or the 50-over World Cup. No one can forget how they dismantled a top-class Indian side in the 2019 ODI World Cup or even in the 2016 and 2021 T20 World Cups.
But have they ever met in the Champions Trophy? The answer is quite surprising—take a look at whether these two giants have ever clashed in the CT.
Has India ever played against New Zealand in Champions Trophy?
India and New Zealand have not faced each other frequently in the ICC Champions Trophy. Their sole encounter in the tournament’s history was in the final of the 2000 edition in Nairobi. At that time, the tournament was known as the ICC Knockout Trophy.
In ICC tournaments, New Zealand has had a decent record against India, and in that final as well, the Blackcaps emerged victorious. India performed well with the bat, posting 264 runs, which was a competitive total at the time. This was largely due to a brilliant 141-run partnership between Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly, who were the backbone of India’s innings. Ganguly played a scintillating knock, scoring a century, while Tendulkar contributed 69 runs. However, wickets fell at regular intervals, preventing India from posting an even bigger total.
When New Zealand came in to chase, they suffered early setbacks, losing both openers quickly. Even Stephen Fleming failed to contribute significantly. However, Chris Cairns turned the game around, dismantling India’s bowling attack with a magnificent 102 runs. He received support from Chris Harris, who provided the finishing touches. As a result, New Zealand won by 4 wickets, securing their first and only ICC Champions Trophy title.
