The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has announced Harry Brook as the new captain for the England ODI and T20I cricket team. Ever since making his international debut in 2022, Brook was earmarked as a potential future skipper. He’s one of the select few batters who represent England across formats.

Last year, the ECB named him Jos Buttler’s deputy, and in his absence, he led England against Australia in a 5-match series. When Buttler decided to step down as the captain in white-ball cricket after a demoralising Champions Trophy 2025 campaign, it was expected that Brook would be named the new England ODI and T20I captain.
The 26-year-old has played 70 white-ball matches for England and was part of their 2022 T20 World Cup winning campaign in Australia.
There were some talks of Ben Stokes being in the running to replace Buttler, but the all-rounder, who has fitness issues and hasn’t played a white-ball match for England since November 2023, wasn’t chosen in the end.
“It’s a real honour to be named England’s white-ball captain. Ever since I was a kid playing cricket at Burley in Wharfedale, I dreamed of representing Yorkshire, playing for England, and maybe one day leading the team. To now be given that chance means a great deal to me.
“I want to thank my family and coaches who’ve supported me every step of the way. Their belief in me has made all the difference and I wouldn’t be in this position without them. There’s so much talent in this country, and I’m looking forward to getting started, moving us forward, and working towards winning series, World Cups and major events. I’m excited to get going and give it everything I’ve got.” Brook said in a statement.
