Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar has suggested the team to go with just Kuldeep Yadav as the lone spinner for the first three Tests against England. The southpaw is the only specialist spinner who has been picked in the squad for the five-match Test series. Ahead of the tour, Bangar advised India to use Kuldeep as the lone spinner in the first three games, suggesting that Jadeja could be dropped.
Kuldeep lone spinner for 3 Tests?
Speaking on JioHotstar, Bangar reckoned that India should Kuldeep as the only spinner for the first three Tests. The reason? He claimed that the tracks in Leeds, Birmingham and London were more seam-friendly and that with Nitish Reddy’s inclusion, there was no need for Jadeja in the playing XI.
“Jadeja is usually preferred overseas for his control and ability to exploit rough patches, but England is unlikely to offer spin-friendly tracks early on. The series begins in June with matches at Headingly, Edgbaston, and Lord’s — all seam-friendly venues. With Nitish Reddy as a batting all-rounder and a pace trio of Bumrah, Siraj, and Akash Deep, India can afford to play just one spinner — and that should be Kuldeep,” Bangar opined.
Apar from Kuldeep, India have only two other spin bowling options – Jadeja and Washington Sundar. The southpaw last featured in a Test in the series against New Zealand last year. He was left out of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy since he sustained a groin injury.
Kuldeep has played 13 Tests so far and has 56 wickets to his name. With best figures of 5/40, he has four five-wicket hauls to his name. The spinner has played most of his Tests in India and has taken 38 wickets at home.
