India cricket team will soon have to decide on their squad for the five-match Test series against England. One conundrum that the selectors are likely to face is to decide which all-rounder will serve as second fiddle to Jadeja. With Ashwin gone, India are left with two spin-bowling all-rounders who can replace him – Axar Patel or Washington Sundar. Or perhaps both.
Axar or Washington?
Both Axar and Washington have relatively lesser experience in Tests compared to most of the other players. Yet, the all-rounders have created a significant impact whenever they have been a part of the Indian team in the longest format of the game.
Talking about Axar’s numbers, he has played 14 Tests so far and has picked 55 wickets. He averages 19.34 and has 5 fifers to his name. With the bat, he has scored 646 runs, including five fifties. However, most of Axar’s wickets have come while playing in India – 47. The eight other wickets he has taken has come when he played in Bangladesh.
On the other hand, Sundar has 25 wickets from 9 Tests, and averages 25.64. With the bat, he has amassed 468 runs and averages 42.94. Like Axar, most of Sundar’s wickets have come while playing at home – 18 while playing in India and 7 in Australia.

Sundar vs Patel recent form
Axar has been in the form of his life off late. It all started with the Champions Trophy where he was promoted up the batting order. And he made the most of it by playing some very handy knocks. He fared decently with the ball as well. Now, that fine form has spilled over to IPL 2025 as well. However, Axar last played a Test in February 2024, and the opposition was the same England.
Sundar, on the other hand, re-entered the Test team in 2024. He impressed with a prolific show against New Zealand, following which he was taken to Australia as well. He made decent contributions with both bat and ball. He was a part of the CT 2025 squad but was benched the whole time. In IPL 2025, he has only played matches and has 5 wickets and 85 runs to his name.
