India are expected to field a strong batting line-up for IND vs ENG 1st ODI. Rohit will return to the side in the 50-over format to open the innings along with Shubman Gill. While the latter has been named the vice-captain for the series and the Champions Trophy, this tour could perhaps be the Hitman’s final white-ball assignment at home. Rohit last played ODIs consistently in the World Cup year in 2023 where he amassed 1255 runs in 27 matches. Since then, he has devoted his time to Tests and T20Is, given that was how India cricket team’s calendar was scheduled.

India have bolstered their spin department for IND vs ENG 1st ODI by including Varun Chakravarthy to their squad. A fresh pitch is expected to be rolled out in Nagpur which will favour spinners towards the second half. With that being said, India are expected to field the spin trio of Jadeja-Kuldeep-Chakravarthy. Axar Patel will have to sit out of the contest as he is not a good fit for ODIs.
Shami to get some game-time
Mohammed Shami is expected to return to ODIs for the first time since the ODI World Cup final in 2023. While he has looked rusty in IND vs ENG T20I series, he will be heavily depended upon, given that he is India’s only frontline pacer for Champions Trophy amid the uncertainty over Bumrah. Arshdeep Singh will be the second pacer in the line-up while Hardik will fulfill the role of the third pacer for the contest.
