Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) has taken the criticism levied against them quite seriously. For the unaware, last year the MCA Cricket Stadium in Pune hosted a Test match between India and New Zealand. There were no on-field controversies in the match, but off the field, there were some issues.
MCA Cricket Stadium water issues last year
Played in the month of October, the heat was still scorching in Pune. According to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) policy, spectators aren’t allowed to bring water bottles into the stadiums. Therefore, the onus to provide clean drinking water falls on the state association and the stadium.
But there was no clean drinking water available at the MCA Cricket Stadium for that game. At noon, when the heat reached the heights, spectators had enough and started protesting. They raised slogans, and the focus shifted from the ground to the sidelines. Shortly after, the MCA made necessary arrangements.

MCA has taken the past grievance into account and realised that no such incident should have happened in the first place. For the upcoming India vs. England 4th Test on January 31, there will be no drinking water-related issues.
“MCA has taken note of feedback from the last India vs New Zealand Test match and has implemented solutions to prevent delays in water dispensing. Adequate water will be readily available throughout the venue, with no anticipated lapse. As this is an evening match, excessive heat is not expected; however, free drinking water will still be provided to ensure spectator comfort,” MCA Secretary Kamlesh Pisal said in a media release.
Improving fan experience
To further improve the viewing experience for spectators, MCA has also created new washrooms for fans. This remains a big issue at several stadiums in India, especially for female spectators. Taking this into account, MCA Cricket Stadium has made necessary upgrades.
“Newly constructed washrooms for the press and media personnel will ensure their convenience and comfort. The spectators’ washroom facilities at the North Stand have been significantly increased, catering to the growing attendance,” he added.
